On
Saturday October 31st, 2009 we met with a squad from the
Montgomery Rifles and Commander Doyle Waller at the cemetery
which contains the grave of First Sergeant Henry Mann, Jr.
formerly of the Appling Grays. We participated in a living
history followed a demonstration by a rifle squad led by
Commander Waller and a Coehorn Mortar team who both put on a
great demonstration. The ladies of the Appling County
Chapter of the United Daughters were there dressed out and
looking good. I owe a special thanks to Adjutant Billy
Bowers and his bride Toni who were dressed as confederate
soldiers as well as Lamar Deen with his camp site set up
equipped with fire and Carlton Rowell in his brand new duds
who had a large family attendance. Also Bryson Moody and
his bride were there and were very helpful during the
activities. Special thanks to Edsel Mayers for the use of
his canopy to protect us form the possibility of rain.
We
will be in the Glennville newspaper and in the Vidalia
newspaper. We made contacts to a lot of South Georgia folks
and several out of state people. We were well received by
all and I believe that the Heritage Tour was successful due
to the numbers of people who attended.
The
family of Henry Mann expressed a desire for us to have a
grave marking ceremony in conjunction with their family get
together in the future.

"The grave marking ceremony

Cemetery in Bacon County was a huge success. Thanks to the
members of the Appling Grays that participated in the event
and the ladies of the Appling County Chapter of the UDC for
their efforts in putting on the event. Also Thanks to Tommy
Wallace and the members and wives of the Tattnall
Invincibles Camp SCV for their able assistance and for their
work with the “Big Gun”. Also Thanks to the compatriots from
Cochran and Claxton along with the Manassas and Reidsville

A message from: Bill Bowers
(Commander,
Appling Grays Camp # 918 SCV)
The dedication ceremony for the Confederate Monument at the
Appling County Courthouse on November 1, 2008 was a huge
success. There was a good crowd on hand. Thank you to the
compatriots from surrounding camps for their invaluable
assistance in the ceremony. There were members from the
Montgomery, Tattnall, Toombs, Bleckley and Effingham camps
(and possibly others that I missed) that participated in the
ceremony along with George King and Tommy Wallace and their
cannons which were most impressive.
Tom Bruno, The sculpture of the Bronze statue was in
attendance all the way from New Orleans, Louisiana. Tom also
did the bronze bust of Jefferson Davis that we placed at the
courthouse in Jeff Davis County several years ago.
Al Perry, our brigade commander, gave an inspiring oration
and the members of the Appling County United Daughters of
the Confederacy adorned the event and served refreshments.
